About us

We tackle the most challenging problems in Cardiotocography and related fields.

We are academicians from different universities around the world. Our central goal at here is to create a research community examining the CTG signals with modern and advanced techniques. In addition, we want to share our work here freely.  A wide variety of talented members give our team the opportunity to innovate in nearly every domain of Biomedical Signal Processing, especially Cardiotocography. On this page, you'll find information about some of the research domains.

Research areas

The research domain of our team is computerized cardiotocography analysis. That is the processing and interpretation of data coming from electronic fetal monitoring devices. Our works cover several domains listed at below:

  • Computerized Cardiotocography Analysis
  • Morphological analysis of CTG signals
  • Linear and nonlinear analysis of CTG signals
  • Time-Frequency analysis of CTG signals
  • Image-based time-frequency analysis of CTG signals
  • Using advanced signal and image processing techniques for CTG analysis
  • Software for CTG analysis
  • Using the data science for CTG analysis
  • Determination of hypoxic fetuses using machine learning approaches
  • Data collection and analysis
  • Preprocessing
  • Feature Transform (feature extraction and selection)
  • Classification

Computerized Cardiotocography Analysis

Electronic fetal monitoring (cardiotocography) is the most diffused surveillance technique in order to check the vital signs of the baby in mother's womb. Although the most of the observers agree that CTG is a useful tool to manage pregnancy and labor processes, they disagree over how suitably the interpretation of it is carried out. In other words, cardiotocography suffers from inter- and even intra-observer variability. Automated CTG analysis provides many valuable advantages, such as reproducibility of the fetal outcome, as well as timely intervention. Also, computerized CTG analysis reduces the interpretation variability among observers and support the more objective assessment.

Morphological Analysis of Cardiotocography Signals

The morphological features of CTG signals are the most robust and powerful indicators to ascertain fetal condition. Basically, baseline fetal heart rate (FHR), accelerations and deceleration patterns of FHR and variability are evaluated as morphological features. From these characteristic features, both of the acceleration patterns and variability points out fetal well-being, whereas the deceleration patterns are assessed as symptoms of fetal distress conditions. Several guidelines, such as FIGO, describe the characteristic patterns of FHR in order to provide a consistent evaluation. The guidelines have directed the computerized CTG analysis.

Linear and Nonlinear Analysis of Cardiotocography Signals

The linear and nonlinear dynamics in computerized CTG analysis are used as conventional features to describe FHR signals. Especially the classification accuracy is improved by using these features in supervised learning approach.
